Reducing water retention of sand for glass mfr. - by treating wet sand with surfactant during transport to glass-works

The water retention capacity of sand is uniformly reduced by adding 5% of a surfactant per tonne of sand. The surfactant is pref. employed when the sand contains 20-35% water; and a biologically degradable surfactant is pref. used, esp. a surfactant with min. 80% degradability. Excessive water contents in sand seriously interfere with glass mfg. processes. Storage or drying employed to reduce the moisture content is inconvenient and/or expensive. Provides an inexpensive method of water removal.
