To adapt a large lathe for turning small parts a gear box (16) is mounted on the bedplate with its input shaft (17) coupled to the spindle head (5). The gear box (16) has two output spindles (18', 18") which drive the face plates (19, 19"). The main slide (8) which runs on the guides (2) is provided with a transverse slide (9) fitted with two tool posts (20', 20") carrying tools (21', 22"). A steady (23) is mounted on the guides (2) and attached to the tailstock (13). The steady is provided with two tailstocks (22', 22") which co-operate with the face plates. The lathe can thus turn two small parts simultaneously, resulting in a more economical use of the machine.
