Prodn. of porous fibres of crosslinked vinyl monomers by (A) impregnating substrate fibres with a mixt. contg. >=1 monovinyl monomer and >=1 polyvinyl monomer, together with a polymerisation initiator, to a fibre swell of 50-300 vol %, (B) polymerising the absorbed monomers, and (C) removing the substrate fibres e.g. by soln. or decompsn. Prods. are used as crosslinked vinyl polymers in granule or powder form, with catalytic activity, redox properties, electron- and ion-exchange capacity, gelatinising, molecular sieve and enzyme fixing capacities. Higher surface area, reaction or adsorption rates and reactivity, are achieved with excellent fluid permeability, associated with the fibrous form, which cannot be produced by normal spinning processes.
|
