1501778 Ethyl vanadate STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO 9 Sept 1976 [16 Oct 1975] 37503/76 Heading C2C Ethyl vanadate, (C 2 H 5 O) 3 VO, is prepared by forming a reaction mixture of vanadium oxytrichloride and ethanol in which the weight ratio of vanadium oxytrichloride to ethanol is from 1 : 1 to 1 : 6, including in or adding to the reaction mixture ammonia and an inert hydrocarbon solvent, and, after completion of the reaction, adding formamide or monomethyl formamide in a weight ratio of amide to vanadium oxytrichloride of at least 1À5 : 1, the solvent being immiscible with the amide and being a non-solvent for ammonium chloride. The ethyl vanadate/hydrocarbon layer may then be separated and the ethyl vanadate recovered therefrom. The solvent may be aliphatic or aromatic. Some of the hydrogen chloride formed in the reaction may be removed before adding ammonia by sweeping the mixture with an inert gas.
