A caulking compsn. for the doors of coke ovens or similar plant contains (a) 25-45% of a latex, (b) 10-25% water, (c) 25-45% of particulate filler, and (d) 5-15% mineral fibres, where >=40% of the fibres pass a 0.152 mm sieve. Suitably the lates contains about 50% solids and has pH is not 4.5, A polyvinyl acetate latex is pref. Component (c) is pref. talc of particle size of 76 mu. The fibres na) may be of glass, mineral wool, ceramic (pref.) or asbestos (pref.). The compsn. may also contain a water-sol. thickener, e.g. Na carboxymethylcellulose, esp. about 2 wt % w.r.t. the water in the compsn. The compsn. may be used to prevent the escape of gases in other installations, e.g. around piping in chemical factories and around pottery kilns. |
