NEW MATERIAL:A 3 (or 4)-fluoro-2-hydroxy-1-substituted-4-hydroxymethyl cyclopentane derivative shown by formula I (B is residue of nucleic acid bases, azido, amino or protected amino; R<1> and R<2> are H or protecting group; k is 0 or 1). EXAMPLE:1-[3alpha-Fluoro-2alpha-hydroxy-4beta-hydroxymethyl-1beta-cycl opentyl]uracil. USE:An antitumor agent or anti-viral agent. PREPARATION:A compound shown by formula II (R<3> is azido, amino or protected amino; R<4> and R<5> are protecting group; Y is H or eliminable active group) is fluorinated with a fluorinating agent such as tetraalkylammonium fluoride in a solvent such as THF or acetonitrile at -70 deg.C-room temperature to give a compound shown by formula I.
