<p>1432718 Recovering polymers for re-use SOUTHWIRE CO 17 Oct 1974 [17 Oct 1973] 45060/74 Heading C3P [Also in Division C7] Halogen substituted insulation material (e.g. compounds of P.V.C. or co-polymers of P.V.C.) is removed from scrap wire (e.g. Aluminium, copper and alloys thereof) by dissolving the insulation material in an organic solvent (e.g. tetrahydrofuran, methylethylketone, methylbutylketone, dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide, toluene, petroleum ether, acetone, N- methylpyrrole, methylethylketone, methylene chloride) at 68-360‹ F. using a counter current extractor, discharging the resulting solution through a solution discharge outlet in the extractor, discharging the undissolved insulation and metallic scrap from the extractor and drying the solution of the halogen substituted material to recover the organic solvent for re-use in the process. The insulation material may additionally comprise polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon and teflon and the solution of the insulation material obtained in the process may be purified, e.g. by filtration or centrifuging and dried using a thin film evaporator.</p> |
