<p>Eye drop solution useful for moistening contact lenses and as artificial tears contains, in aqueous solution, (a) dextran or arabinogalactan, (b) polyvinyl alcohol, and (c) benzalkoniumchloride. Component (a) of the solution is pref. a dextran of molecular weight ca 10000-1000000 or an arabinogalactan of mol. wt. ca 10000-250000. This component is pref. present in a concn. of ca 0.001-5 wt.%. Component (b) is pref. a polyvinyl alcohol of mol. wt. 22000-220000. This component is pref. present in a concn. of ca 0.5-2.0 wt.%. Belzalkonium chloride is pref. present in a concn. of ca 0.001-0.1 wt.%. The benzoalkonium chloride interacts with the dextran or arabinogalactan to form a complex which is adsorbed by the cornea to give a prolonged wetting effect. The polyvinyl alcohol is similarly adsorbed by the surface of contact lenses to give prolonged wetting. The eye drop soln. consequently gives desirable prolonged wetting of both cornea and contact lenses.</p> |
