The light signal phases of road traffic signal lights as are used, for example, during roadworks for protecting the traffic are controlled by a control generator (15) both in accordance with the order and also the duration of the light signals. In order to be able to synchronise the periodic operating sequence of the signal lights with one another even when the control generators of the individual signal lights are not connected to one another via a cable or via a radio link, it is provided that the control generators (15) can be connected via detachable couplings to a synchronisation device by means of which the control generators can be set to a predetermined phase relationship of the operating sequence relative to the operating sequence of the remaining signal lights. For the synchronisation process, all control generators or all control generators apart from one can be removed from the associated signal lights and are constructed in such a manner that they are transportable as a structural unit removed from the signal light, maintaining the phase relationship set by means of the synchronisation device. As an alternative, it can be provided that the synchronisation device generates periodic synchronisation signals and is constructed in such a manner that it can be brought to the control generators at the respective location of the signal light, maintaining the periodicity of the synchronisation signals generated by it. <IMAGE>
