The suspension dampers in a motor car are checked by measuring oscillation of certain parts of the body w.r.t. the wheels when the wheels on one axle are allowed to fall. Motor car body oscillation is measured by firmly attaching a measuring unit adjacent to a suspension damper. The unit contains a light source and receiver which are rigidly fixed. An element with an opening is free to oscillate in the light beam as the body oscillates. This element is suspended on a spring loaded beam allowing perpendicular oscillation. The light receiver is connected to an indicator unit adjacent to the vehicle.
