Surface coating material for finishing woodwork, esp. chipboard, consists of a backing paper, opt. contg. inorganic fillers and coated on >=1 face. Face-coating consists of untreated, undissolved starch, (I), and synthetic and/or natural binders (II), pref. in (I):(II) ratio 0.6:1 to 1:0.5 (1:1). Finished woodwork can be used for furniture interiors and caravan partitions. Material is cheap; can be prepd. in single step; is strong, light in colour, opaque, mat, fast to light, can be lacquered, washed, wiped and worked. Microporosity present prevents blistering and material resists dirt deposition in pores.
