PURPOSE:To obtain the subject nerve cell-repairing agent which is useful for prevention and treatment for nerve degeneration diseases such as senile dementia represented by Alzheimer type dementia by using specific compounds which are partially novel extracted from Phytolacca americana L. or the like, as an active ingredient. CONSTITUTION:At least one selected from the compound of the formula I (one of R<1> and R<2> is H, and the other is formula II; R is CH2OH, CHO), a novel compound of formula III which is isolated from dried bark of Magnolia obovata is used as an active ingredient to give the subject agent for repairing denatured nerve cells, because the compound has actions to markedly accelerate the survival of nerve cells and extension of neurites, and increase the activity of choline acetyl transferase in nerve cells, especially to accelerate survival and growth of cholinergic nerve cells. |
