1499239 Boring earth &c LEE C MOORE CORP 10 Aug 1976 [5 Sept 1975] 33228/76 Heading E1F A drill pipe rack for storing pipes 13 horizontally in front of an oil well derrick 2 includes sets of sloping fingers 12 for supporting the pipes 13 and a screw conveyor 47 associated with each set of fingers 12 for moving the pipes 13 in sequence to a position where they can be picked up by transfer arms 40. The fingers 12 of each set are pivotally mounted by pins 10 on an upright 3, the upper end of each finger 12 resting on an upright 6 and the lower end carrying a roller 15. A dolly 18 having wheels 22, 23 and cam surface 35 is mounted on each upright and can be moved vertically by screw 30. A screw conveyor 47 is carried by each dolly 18 and is rotated intermittently to move the pipes 13 in the uppermost layer step by step to a position (shown dotted Fig. 4) where each pipe can be picked up in turn, by the transfer arms. When all the pipes in the top layer have been removed, the dolly is lowered by screw 30, the cam surface 35 engaging the rollers 15 on the fingers 12 to raise the empty finger 12 as shown in Fig. 4 and expose the next layer of pipes 13. The conveyor then moves this layer step by step to the transfer position. This procedure is continued until all the pipes have removed and is reversed when removing pipe from the well. The transfer arms 40 have rollers 44 which engage the pipe 13 and are moved by ram 45 to a position (Fig. 2) in which the pipe can be picked up by a strongback 71. |
