Mineral-bonded panels and other mouldings are made from wood chips coated with a binder consisting of an aq. soln. of water glass and borates. The coated chips are spread out and hot pressed to make the panels. A tetraborate is pref. used, and its solubility in the aq. soln. increased by adding alkali hydroxide, the pref. binder consisting of a soln. of 50% sodium water glass, NaOH, water, and sodium tetraborate, used in the ratio 16:0.1:1.0:1.9. Alternatively, the binder consists of 50% sodium water glass, water, and sodium metaborate, used in the ratio 7.0:0.3:1.0. The fire resistance of the panels may be further increased by adding inorganic fillers, esp. diatomite, clay flour, and similar materials. The panels have adequate strength and are inexpensive to make; but they have an increased resistance to fire as compared with panels using an organic binder.
|
