HALOGENATION OF METAL PHTHALOCYANINES

Metal phthalocyanine pigments are chlorinated and/or brominates in a reaction medium of TiCl4 contg. AlCl3. The reaction can be carried out at atmos. pressure instead of higher pressures required when TiCl4 above is used. The TiCl4 is cheaper and more readily available than AlCl3 (used in melts with NaCl as reaction medium), and is easily recovered by distn. In an example, CuPc is heated to 150 degrees C in a mixt. of TiCl4 and AlCl3 and chlorinated for 5 hr. at 140-150 degrees C The TiCl4 is distilled off and themelt extracted with dil. H2SO4 to give a pigment contg. 13-16 Cl atoms per mol.
