Roll with a core has a cover sleeve encompassing the core, the sleeve being radially supported int eh central core area. The core tapers from the area of central support to the roll ends so that in the unloaded condition of the roll, ring spaces are available between the core ends and the ends of the sleeve. These ring spaces disappear, however, when the roll is under load. The sleeve (2) is located loosely in the roll central area, and is supported via a rubber-elastic material layer. The distance between the core (1) and the sleeve (2) is adjusted by the sleeve being conically widened on the insides of its ends, with slide pieces correspondingly present on the core bearing journals (3).
