L- alpha -acylhydrazino- beta -phenyl-propionitrile compounds useful as intermediates in the production of L- alpha -hydrazino- beta -phenyl-propionic acids. Also included are processes for preparing the compounds of this invention by aminating L- alpha -acylamido- beta -phenyl-propionitrile and processes for hydrolyzing the compounds of this invention to form L- alpha -hydrazino- beta -phenyl-propionic acid compounds.
