1,195,307. Dimerizing olefins. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 20 Feb., 1969 [4 March, 1968], No. 10290/68. Heading C5E. [Also in Division B1] An olefin containing at least 3 carbon atoms is dimerized or co-dimerized with at least one other olefin using a co-precipitated silica-based catalyst containing NiO and 0À1-10% by wt. Al 2 O 3 . The nickel content is preferably 2-12% by wt. calculated as metal. Co-precipitated MgO may also be present in amount up to 10%. The catalyst preferably contains up to 0À8% by wt. of an alkali metal oxide, calculated as metal, when the mixture of olefins includes a proportion of a branched olefin. The dimerization may be carried out in gaseous or liquid phase at 0-120‹ C. Examples describe the dimerization of propylene and the codimerization of propylene with various butene isomers. |
