1501252 Gas disengagement in bi-polar electrolysis cells PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 1 April 1975 [2 April 1974] 13239/75 Heading C7B In a bi-polar diaphragm cell comprising individual cells in mechanical and electrical series, cathode gas (e.g. H 2 from brine electrolysis) is recovered via channel 71 leading from the cathode chamber into a gas liquid separator 77 via a downwards deflector 79 which effects partial separation, the gas-liquid flow being thereafter reversed (as by impinging on the separator base) to complete separation. The cell may have conventional interdigitating electrodes and diaphragms. Channel 71 may be inside but remains hydraulically separate from the cell. Other deflector shapes are disclosed. Orifice 91 is for catholyte recirculation. A separator may be provided at each end of the channel. The first deflection may reduce the flow velocity to 0À25-0À5 and the reversal to 0À1-0À2 of its original value.
|
