The fibres are gathered into a strand to which moisture e.g. 2-6% by weight, is applied and which is then passed into a container. As shown, glass filaments 2 emanating from a bushing 1 are drawn over the surface of a binder applicator 3 e.g. a roller (shown) or a spray, thence through an oven 4, around a gathering shoe 5 to form a strand 20 which is sprayed with water 7 from a nozzle 6, over a roll 8, between the surfaces of belts 9 and 12 of a gear-toothed attenuator comprising rotating pulleys 10, 14 and 11, 13. The finished strand is projected onto a deflector (solid or wire-mesh) screen 15 thence into a rotating, porous-sided, container 16 wherein it accumulates. The strand may be used as reinforcement for rubber.</p> |
