An underlay for a parquet floor or the like consists of a paper or cardboard layer 4, which is coated with an LDPE layer 5, on whose surface expanded PS granules 6 are caused to be secured. The product is made by combining a paper or cardboard web with an extruded LDPE layer in the nip between a pressing roller and a cooling roller while the plastic layer is in the melted condition. At the same time, PS granules are fed into the pressing nip, being dispensed by the cooling roller. <IMAGE>
