This brush holder for electrical machines is provided with guide elements (9, 10) which bound a retaining region for at least one carbon brush (8), as well as with an arrangement (17; 15, 16) having means (20) for individually acting on each individual carbon brush with a specific contact-pressure force. In the case of brush holders, not all the components are normally subjected to wear or to uniform wear. Specifically, in order to avoid having to replace undamaged parts as well in the case of expensive brush holders, a brush holder is proposed in the case of which parts which are subject to wear can be replaced easily and cheaply while maintaining the original dimensions. In the case of such a brush holder, the guide elements (9, 10) are two profiled bodies which extend over the entire length of the brush holder and have a flat reference surface (12, 13). The supporting structure (2, 4) contains elements (6) which support the guide elements and have bearing surfaces which are located symmetrically with respect to a plane containing the brush longitudinal axis (7), the reference surfaces (12, 13) of the guide elements (9, 10) resting on associated bearing surfaces of the supporting elements (6).
