Telecommunications cable using optical fibres - surrounds central reinforcing core and is sandwiched between extruded dielectric and insulating sleeve

The telecommunications cable, for regional and local transmissions, employs a number of optical fibres. The cable had a central reinforcing core (1) of metal or plastics surrounded by an extruded dielectric (2), around which the optical fibres (4) are spaced. The optical fibres are held in position by a filler (5), e.g. a petroleum derivative, filling the space between the extruded dielectric (2) and the insulating cable sleeve (3). Pref. the filler (5) contains means for absorbing the light waves lying within the frequency band transmitted via the optical fibres.
