To maintain and service an array of open-end spinning stations, a mobile unit travels along the line of spinning units to clean the equipment and splice broken yarn ends under programme control. A control circuit is provided for the switching unit with a time register acting after a switching unit has been activated by the step-by-step switch, which also controls the mechanism to handle a stoppage at the spinning station after a pre-set time interval. The system ensures that the maintenance unit dwells for a limited time at the spinning station with constant times to effect the maintenance and repair functions. This gives a rapid fault recognition and rectification, without affecting productivity.
