Water injection for IC engine - takes place before, during and after combustion to increase efficiency

Water is injected into the cylinders of an internal combustion engine as a finely divided spray. It vapourises during the engine cycle and the resulting steam raises the total pressure within the cylinders. This makes it possible for combustion to take place with a smaller quantity of fuel since attainment of combustion conditions is not dependent on compression of the fuel alone. The water is injected before combustion occurs. Further water can be injected during combustion and again after combustion has taken place. The steam produced is condensed from the exhaust gases cleaned and returned to the reservoir for reuse in the injection process. The injection takes place during a working stroke without fuel.
