Axle drive for electric railway vehicle - has universal joint with ball connections between hollow shaft and gear

The axle drive coupling for an electrically powered railway vehicle is placed between a hollow axle and coaxial solid axle of the same wheel set. The hollow axle is coupled to a driving gear wheel and to a solid axle. The couplings ensure axial and universal joint free movements. The hollow shaft and gear wheel have triangular flanges (g) connected by pivoting links with balls. The latter are in a common plane normal to the driving axle. The projecting pins of pivot balls are held by ring segments (i). These segments connect one ball of one flange to two balls of the other flange. The balls are arranged in the connected flange assembly on corners of a regular hexagon.
