Sugar alcohols of the formula I are prepared by hydrogenating gamma - or delta -lactones of aldonic acids or aldaric acids of the formula IIa. The symbols in the formulae are defined in the claim. Hydrogenation is effected using a catalyst comprising a mixed oxide comprising 20 to 95% by weight of copper oxide and 5 to 80% by weight of chromium oxide and/or aluminium oxide. The temperature used is 70 to 200 DEG C.
