The butterfly valve has a spindle (8) which carries two outer discs (10) joined together to form the valve. The outer bearing (7) also fits into a blind hole (11) in the outer discs. The control of the valve may be automatic or manual. In the manual version the spindle (8) fit into a sleeve (17). The spindle carries a cross pin (18) which locks the sleeve to the spindle. A turning handle (16) passes through the sleeve. The sleeve fits inside a cylinder (13). The cylinder has an end cap (21) and the sleeve is pressed home in the cylinder with a spring (22) serrations in the cylinder wall below the pin (18) enable the valve to be locked in any position.
