Chlorination of copper phthalocyanines (CuPc) in which 0.25-0.32 wt. parts CuPc are added quickly to 1 part melt of AlCl3/NaCl at between the solidicn. temp. and 120 degrees C and chlorine then passed in rapidly at 140-160 degrees C. Process is used for prepn. of CuPc pigments in yellowish-green shades, contg. 8-16 (13-16) Cl atoms. Formation of AlPc is suppressed by the rapid addn. of the CuPc with cooling. CuPc made by any known process can be used, even grades of low purity, and converted to high grade polychlor CuPc at high output rates. The prods. can be finished to pigment form by any known process. Use of more expensive chlorinating or oxidising agents is avoided.
|
