The tape transfer control, for a tape recorder with supply and take-up reels, has the speed of rotation of the two reels measured independently to obtain the ratio between them. The control system stores reference data relating to the different types of tape and tape reels, with the data for the type of tape and reel in use being extracted. The extracted reference data is combined with an intermediate signal, representing the ratio between the speeds of rotation of the two reels, to provide output signals used to indicate the position of the tape and/or to switch-off the tape recorder at the end of the tape. The output signals are supplied to a visual display with numbers representing the tape position.
