The mechanical safety device is applied to lifts actuated by screwed spindles, particularly motor vehicle lifts. The lifts are equipped with two columns. A lifting truck (1), guided in each column, rests on a lifting nut (2), which travels along a screwed spindle (3), followed by a safety nut (4) at a short and constant distance from it. The lifting nut is equipped with a locking catch, normally spring-loaded against the safety nut. If the truck falls onto the safety nut this catch is freed from the safety nut, engaging in a groove formed in the spindle.
