Equipment for preventing IC engine overheating comprises a conventional thermal expansion unit (5) in a casing through which (e.g. coolant flows. A transverse shaft (2) converts axial movement of the unit into rotation of an external lever (6), against a retaining spring (7). Lever movement is arranged to vary the effective length of a pivoted arm in the throttle linkage, and thus max. throttle opening. The expansion units sits in a telescopic double-spring (11, 13) mounting with one spring (11) weaker, and one stronger, than the lever retaining spring (7) set so that the weakest spring is fully compressed at normal working temp., the next (7) fully extended with the lever against a stop (19) at max. safe temp. Any further unit expansion compresses the strongest spring, activating an alarm.
