An Fe-air battery is stabilised by adding an S-contg. cpd. forming free S ions in the electrolyte in an amt. yielding 10-1000 ppm S per million pts. wt. active Fe material. The battery comprises >=1 cells each including (a) a positive electrode contg. Co, Ni and/or Ag metal to reduce O2 during discharge and develop O2 during charge, (b) an alkaline electrolyte and (c) a negative electrode contg. electrochemically active Fe. Pref. the s cpd. is added in a concn. within 100-500 ppm. It may be added incrementally, the total added amt. not exceeding 1000 ppm. S cpd. may be added whenever the battery exhibits an unstable capacity (e.g. after overcharge), esp. after performing a very slow discharge of available capacity. The S- contg. cpd. is an alkali metal sulphide. |
