The compact binary coder has fast response times and the theoretical min. of inputs and outputs. It has a simple layout and can be built-up to handle any number of input signals. Each element in the coder consists of an exclusive-OR gate coupled by its two inputs to the two inputs of an AND-gate. The element's inputs are the gates' shared inputs and the outputs the gates' two outputs. Several such basic elements can be combined in a large number of specified ways to build up coders cabable of handling inputs signals and producing output signals of specified relationships to inputs.
