1413264 Diazamethine dyestuffs HOECHST AG 1 Feb 1974 [2 Feb 1973] 04690/74 Heading C4P The invention comprises water-insoluble diazamethine dyestuffs of the general formula wherein each R is H or a non-ionic substituent, e.g. halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, nitro, alkyl- or aryl-sulphone, carboxylic acid ester or optionally substituted sulphonic acid amide or carboxylic acid amide. They are prepared by (a) condensing 1 mole of one or more m-phenyl. ene diamines with 2 moles of one or more 2- hydroxy-1-naphthaldehydes or (b) by condensing 1 mole of a 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde with a monoazomethine of the general formula Reaction (a) takes place at 50-100‹ C. in neutral or acidic aqueous or organic medium. The dyes are used to colour synthetic polymers, lacquers and printing pastes.
