Subject holder comprises a subject carrier mounted movably in a hermetically sealable vessel with a window. In the measuring position, the subject on the carrier is located directly behind the window. The holder is pref. used to measure swelling of the subject (pref. an O-ring) in a liquid or gaseous medium (pref. fluorochlorohydrocarbon) under pressure.The subject carrier pref. includes a carrier plate spaced apart from a float with a downwardly opening cavity, and the vessel is partly filled with liquid so that, in the measuring position, the subject lies above liquid level, and in the liquid when the vessel is tilted.The appts. allows precision measurement of dimensions without removing the subject from the medium.
