PURPOSE:To enable efficient production of a carboxylic acid which is useful as a starting substance for surfactants, stabilizers, esters or the like by culturing a microorganism which can oxidize a terminal carbon atom of chain hydrocarbon to a chain-end monocarboxylic acid (the carboxyl group is on one chain end of the hydrocarbon moiety) and dissolving the cell bodies of the microorganism with hot alkali. CONSTITUTION:A microorganism capable of producing a chain-end monocarboxylic acid by oxidation of one end of chain hydrocarbon in the cell bodies, such as Myco-bacterium KO-013 strain (FERM P-13478), is inoculated in a culture medium containing chain hydrocarbon (for example, pentadecane) to effect shaking culture at 30 deg.C for 11 days. Then, 5N aqueous sodium hydroxide is added to the culture mixture to adjust the pH over 9, then to effect treatment with hot alkali at 60-140 deg.C foe 30 minutes to 24 hours to dissolve a part or the whole of the micro-organisms including the chain-end monocarboxylic acid such as pentadecanoic acid and collect the carboxylic acid (salt) which is useful as a surfactants, stabilizers, a variety of esters in the fields of oil chemistry, petroleum chemistry, medicines, agrochemicals, cosmetics and food products. |
