A fast reactor comprises a pressure vessel contg. liquid metal coolant with an inert gas blanket over it and forced circulation pumps to conduct the coolant through the fission zone of the reactor itself and around the tubes of the heat exchangers. The pressure vessel wall is in the shape of a cylinder with its axis horizontal and with a series of narrowed necks for the contact between the liquid metal surface and the inert gas blanket. The cross-section of the reactor is pref. circular but may also be elliptical. Pref. there is an additional, internal container shaped as an open-ended tube forming an annular space between itself and the vessel; this annular space serves for the return flow of the liquid metal coolant from the heat exchangers to the intake side of the circulating pumps. By keeping the interface between the liquid metal and the inert gas blanket in a constricted neck-type upward extension of the vessel cross-section, the stresses in the vessel itself due to differential temperature are considerably reduced.
|
