An automatic vending machine is for selling individual portions of cooked food such as hamburgers. The food is stored in magazines in a refrigerated chamber, and portions are released individually, cooked and ejected from the machine in response to the insertion of a coin. Three magazines of food portions (24) are held in a cooled chamber at the top of the machine. An extraction mechanism (26) can extract a single portion from this arrangement when a coin is inserted, and the portion falls down a funnel shaped guide into the cooking part of the machine. This consists of a drawer (56) which is pushed forward into an oven (50). The base of the drawer (58) can be released after the cooking to release the portion down a chute and so to the customer.
