The four stroke IC engine has a cylinder head over each cylinder with a slightly dished profile. A valve supported on a central stem matches the profile of the cylinder head and rotates inside it. The valve has a single port through it and as it rotates the port uncovers first the inlet manifold and then the exhaust manifold. This makes it possible for a single valve to be used in each cylinder with a simpler driving mechanism than is necessary for the several reciprocating valves of the conventional type. The valve is cam operated to obtain the correct timing.
