摘要 <p>The cell comprises a cathodic compartment contg. a soln to be treated and sepd. from an anodic compartment by an anion exchange membrane. An electric field between the electrodes reduces the sugar to a corresp. polyhydric alcohol while anions in the catholyte migrate towards the anodic compartment. The cell is provided with valves for fraining and renewing the electrolyte. Current supply is continuously adjustable, pref. by potentiometer, in response a measure of growing acidity in the anodic compartment. Provided direct electrochemical reduction of acid solns. of sugars such as dextrose, xylose, glucose, fructose, lactose and sucrose. These are converted into corresp. polyhydric alcohols, such as sorbitol, which are almost as effective for sweetening as sugars, but have many advantages such as not harming diabetic patients. The cell provides an economic continuous process plant. It has a practical output and is cheaper and simpler to operate than the chemical reduction process.</p>
