A glove chamber in which oxides of nitrogen are formed, e.g. during soln. of radioactive materials in nitric acid, incorporates an appts. for converting such gases into prods. which can be discharged safely into the evacuation system of the installation, or condensed. The appts. consists of a cartridge with permeable ends fitted with activated carbon and capable of being heated to about 600 degrees C. The nitro-gases pass through the cartridge and are converted to N2 and CO. The CO is converted to CO2 by being burnt in O2. The appts. allows noxious nitro-gases to be destroyed, while occupying little space and excluding all radioactive contamination, or any decontamination difficulty.
|
