The cutting machine consists of a vehicle (10) on which a motor-driven cutter is arranged laterally, the longitudinal axis of which is at right angles to the direction of travel in the working position and can be swung upwards. In order to nonetheless obtain more satisfactory surface cleaning or levelling at a lower power requirement than hitherto and in order to make it unnecessary to additionally transport the removed material, the cutter consists of a cylinder (12), to the circumferential surface of which breaker plates (16 to 19) are rigidly fastened on staggered helical lines. The planes of the breaker plates (16 to 19) arranged on the helical lines enclose an angle of 20 to 30 DEG with the radial plane. The breaker plates situated on one helical line are staggered by half a pitch relative to the breaker plates located on the directly adjacent helical line. The winding direction of the helical lines and the direction of rotation of the cutter are opposed as viewed from the vehicle. <IMAGE>
