A method of constructing a chimney stack consists of embedding flat inserts of plastics material with the mortar between the bricks (1) so as to resist the corrosive effect of the hot gasses passing through the chimney. In addition, vertical protective strips (6) are attached to the vertical joints between bricks. Theese inserts (2) are roughly ladder shaped, the width of the bricks, and their edges are U shaped, into which fit connecting strips. They fit in this way into corner pieces (3) which are square shaped, with a diagonal strip. The vertical strips (6) are roughly H shaped, the cross piece extending through the bricks, and the vertical arms covering the inside and outside joints.
