A rotary sliding vane (3) type vacuum pump (1) is mounted on the shaft extension (4) of an electric motor (5). The motor is attached to a flange (12) which fixes to a shoulder (13) in a cylindrical casing (6). The casing has a cover (7) which has a static seal (10) to the casing body. The inlet pipe (8) through the casing cover is welded to the cover and the exhaust pipe (9) is welded to the casing body. The pump discharges through a filter (17) into the space (16) within the casing above an oil bath (15) filling the lower part of the casing. This avoids sealing problems on the shaft between the pump and the motor. The pump and motor assembly can be lifted out of the casing as a unit.
