The normally engaged spring clutch can be operated with either end driven. The clutch consists of a drum (12) with engaging surface (30) and a second drum (14) with engaging surface (34). A spiral spring (16) is fitted with its windings on the engaging surfaces of both drums. Part of these windings (46) are dimensioned so that they are tensioned on the surfaces, transmitting torque between the two parts. The spring is surrounded by a control sleeve (18) provided with a device by which an optical rotating or fixed operating condition of the sleeve can be achieved. The ends of the spiral spring are angled outward and protrude through a radially extending slot at either end of the sleeve.
