The compensating socket for use in fastening handles etc. to wooden surfaces by means of fastening screws comprises a sleeve (11) for insertion into the receiving bore (5) in the surface wherein the outer cross-sectional area of the sleeve increases over at least part of the sleeve length from a size smaller than the cross-section of the bore to a size larger than the cross-section of the bore. When tightening the fastening screw (6, 7, 9) the sleeve penetrates into the bore (5) and thereby correspondingly widens it. The sleeve pref. has a collar forming an annular contact face with the outer cross-section of the sleeve increasing gradually towards the collar.
