1507176 Forming, opening and filling bags HAVER & BOECKER 11 April 1975 [13 April 1974] 15013/75 Heading B8C [Also in Division B5] An apparatus for making bags and applying the bags to a filling nozzle 51 of a bag filling machine, comprises rollers 20, 21 for intermittently feeding bag lengths of tubular plastics film between opposed transverse welding jaws 7, (7a), Fig. 6 (not shown) and past a transverse cutter 23 which is located below the welding jaws 7, (7a) but above the pick-up end of a conveyer which grips the upper ends of the bags, formed by transverse welding and cutting operations, so that they hang down freely as they are conveyed to a bag mouth opening device from which the bags are successively transferred and applied to the filling nozzle 51. The welding jaw 7 is supported by a pivotally suspended U-shaped carrier (8), Fig. 6 (not shown), and the other welding jaw (7a) is secured to a further pivotally mounted jaw carrier (8a) Fig. 6 (not shown). The jaws 7, (7a) are moved towards each other by a traction force; which is applied to the jaw carrier (8) at two positions which lie outside the width of the jaw 7, and by a pressing force which acts centrally on the jaw carrier (8a). The bag conveyer comprises two laterally spaced endless chains (27), Fig. 2 (not shown), which are movable stepwise and are adjustable in the lateral direction to accommodate bags of different widths. Each chain (27) carries a plurality of co-operating fixed and pivotal bag gripping members (37, 38), Fig, 4 (not shown), spring urged towards one another. The gripping members (37, 38) of each chain (27) are opened at the pick-up and discharge ends of the conveyer by levers (41, 42), Fig. 3 (not shown), which are linked by a rod (43), Fig. 3 (not shown), and actuated by a piston-and-cylinder unit (44), Fig. 3 (not shown). The bag mouth opening device comprises two opposed vacuum tubes 45, 46 which are movable apart to separate the opposed bag walls gripped thereby and are also movable bodily in the downstream direction of the bag conveyer to present the openedup bag below a device for applying the bag to the filling nozzle 51. This latter device comprises fingers 47 which are movable horizontally and about respective vertical axes and a horizontal axis to enter, stretch taut and apply the bag mouth to the filling nozzle 51 to which it is secured by clamping jaws 51a. |
