The automatic control for the choke in the manifold pressure line of a diesel engine has a shut off valve comprising a valve seat and an interacting sealing plate. The valve is controlled by an adjusting piston and is only closably when the oil pressure fails and only in the rest position of the adjusting piston in which the choke is closed. The housing wall and a control piston connected to the valve pipe encompasses a chamber into which enters a branch line which connects the automatic control unit to the manifold pressure line section. A chamber on the other side of the control piston is connected to atmosphere.
