1499240 Ascorbic acid preparations F HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO AG 29 Nov 1976 [30 Nov 1975] 49626/76 Heading C2V [Also in Division A2] A process for the manufacture of stable, dry, free-flowing preparations containing ascorbic acid or a salt thereof, e.g. an alkali or alkaline earth salt, comprises mixing a pre-swollen, non- agglutinating cereal grain e,g. wheat grain, with a concentrated aqueous solution of ascorbic acid or a salt thereof, drying and optionally comminuting the mixture. The preparations suitably have a particle size between 250 Á and 2000 Á and have a vitamin C content of at least 10 wt. per cent which for ascorbic acid may be appropriately 15 to 25 wt. per cent and for sodium ascorbate 25 to 45 wt. per cent. In an example a preparation containing 36 to 38% sodium ascorbate is prepared by heating maize grains and water in an autoclave at 120‹ C.; drying the product at 80‹ C. for 60 minutes; adding a 60% wt./vol. aqueous sodium ascorbate solution; drying the resulting mixture at 60‹ C. under nitrogen at 150 mm./Hg and comminuting the preparation. Use.-These preparations may be mixed with feedstuffs to provide vitaminized feedstuffs in which the vitamin is more stable towards moisture, enzymes and mineral salts which may be present compared with the pure vitamin in similar feedstuffs. |
